Nand Lal released, vows to fight 'till the end' Maharashtra's Election Commissioner Nand Lal sent to jail by the state Assembly was released as he challenged his conviction in the High Court and braced for a confrontation with CM Vilasrao Deshmukh accusing him of "political vendetta". Nand Lal, who vowed to fight "till the end", came out of Arthur Road Jail at 1030 AM on Friday after spending a night following his dramatic arrest on Thurday evening hours after the Assembly in an unprecedented move punished him for breach of privilege. The official was picked up by policemen in plain clothes from his first floor office opposite Mantralaya. The former IAS officer, who was kept in the jail where underworld don Abu Salem is also lodged, moved the Bombay High Court appealing against his conviction saying it was arbitrary and against principles of natural justice. "I am a courageous person. I will fight till the end," said an unperturbed Nand Lal who sported a blue cap. The Assembly had approved a resolution sentencing Nand Lal to two days 'simple custody' following a report of the House Privileges Committee in a breach of privilege matter against him in 2006 triggering a conflict over his jurisdiction and powers regarding local bodies elections. Explaining the rationale behind Nand Lal not spending two full days in the jail, a Vidhan Bhawan official said "he was sentenced to two days simple custody and not to 48-hour simple custody". "He was taken into custody before sunset yesterday which was counted as the first day of his sentence. He was released after sunrise, which was counted as second day of his sentence," the official said. Nand Lal, who has been at loggerheads with the Chief Minister, lashed at him for "exerting pressure through intermediaries to dereserve Deshmukh's Latur constituency in Marathwada region".
