SC DECLINES TO COME TO THE RESCU OF EUNUCHS 2/16/2009 The Supreme Court declined to entertain a petition seeking direction to the Union government to constitute a National Commission for Kinnars for their rehabilitation on grounds that they were the most neglected segment of society. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, however, granted them the liberty to approach appropriate authorities for redressal of their grievances. Earlier counsel for the petitioners submitted before the court that the Kinnars were the most neglected lot in the society and no government had taken any steps for their welfare and rehabilitation forcing them to beg on streets. The apex court, however, told petitioner Sonam Singh that this court could not issue such directions to the government and the petitioner should approach the appropriate authorities. The Counsel for the petitioner submitted that the representation made to the government had fallen on deaf ears and the government had not responded till date. UNI
