P&H HC Dismisses Punjab Govt's Plea To Cancel DGP Virk's Bail Dated:18-02-2009 Source: UNI CHNDIGADH: Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice H S Bhalla dismissed the plea of the Punjab government to cancel the regular bail granted in a corruption case to former state police chief Sarbdeep Singh Virk, presently posted as DGP in Mumbai as head of the Maharashtra Police Housing Corporation. The bail had been granted by Justice Bhalla in connection with the case registered by the state Vigilance Bureau at Mohali on September 8, 2007 under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income following which he was arrested on September 9 from Maharashtra Sadan, New Delhi. The Punjab Government had prayed for bail cancellation alleging Virk was not co-operating in the investigation nor had appeared even once before the Investigating Officer(IO) or the concerned court. Former Punjab Advocate General Rajinder Singh Cheema, the counsel for Virk had pleaded that the plea was no longer relevant as the charge-sheet in the case had already been presented to the Special Judge, Mohali and the proceedings were in progress.
