BMC agrees to pay Rs 5 lakh to parents of missing child Mumbai | Thursday, Mar 5 2009 IST Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) today agreed to pay a compensation of Rs five lakh to the parents of a new-born child, reported missing from the government Sion Hospital on January one this year. In a statement before the division bench,comprising of Justices Bilal Nazki and AR Joshi, city corporation said as a policy matter it could not enhance the compensation to more than Rs five lakh. The High Court had yesterday directed the BMC to pay Rs 10 lakh to the Mohan and Mohini Nerulkar, parent of the missing new-born. The bench, however, adjourned the case till tomorrow seeking the BMC to take instruction from the higher authorities to enhance the compensation. The Court also asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone IV, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which was set up to find the child, to remain present in the court tomorrow. The Corporation stated that it was giving the same compensation to the kin of King Edward Memorial (KEM) resident doctor Chandrakant Patil (25), who died during the recent floods in Bihar in a relief camp. Nerukars' baby boy was allegedly stolen by an unidentified woman, while Mohini was in the bathroom, on the morning of January 1, two days after he was born. Earlier the BMC had suspended Dr Swapnil Kore and nurse Shobha Parab, who were on duty when the child went missing, following a directive by the court during the hearing of the case. Apart from suspending the doctor and a nurse, the BMC had also directed dean of another municipal hospital Dr Ravi Rananavare to conduct an inquiry into the case. -- (UNI) -- 05BY9.xml
