If the statistical details available with the Mumbai police have any indications, cyber crime rate has risen significantly in the last few years in the metropolis. Among the various cyber crimes, a significant number of people have fallen prey to Nigerian letter scams, which lured the receivers that they inherit property worth crores in the foreign country. Credit card frauds, sending vulgar contents, identity theft, hacking and lottery scams are among the other fraudulent practices in which the Mumbaikars are getting trapped. "Cyber crime rate is rapidly increasing and more and more people are falling prey to various tactics applied by cyber frauds. There is a need to create more awareness among the people about such crimes," Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria said. "Such crimes are likely to increase in future as criminals commit the crime behind the scene and there is a sense among them that of not being caught," he added. The number of cyber cases abruptly rose from 142 in 2005 to 775 cases in 2008, raising alarm over increasing number of cyber crimes.
