In a setback to the NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance, the Guwahati High Court on Friday stayed Speaker B M Lanong's ruling placing two legislators - Khknam MLA Paul Lyngdoh and Independent Limison Sangma - under interim suspension. "The impugned interim orders suspending both Lyngdoh and Sangma and the ongoing disqualification proceedings against each of them pending before the respondent are hereby stayed," T Vaiphei, heading the Shillong bench of the court, said in an interim order. In case of Mr. Lyngdoh, the lone MLA from Khnam, the court held that the MPA was not a political party. "Each of the political parties forming the MPA appears to have contested the election separately as a separate political party. Therefore, prima facie finding of the respondent that a prima facie case of disqualification of the petitioner under Tenth Schedule is made out, is nothing, but perversity." The order passed ex-parte, gave the respondents the liberty 'to apply for modification or cancellation thereof'.
