Two senior police officers of Chennai, whose suspension was ordered by the Madras High Court in connection with the police-lawyers clash on February 19, are likely to approach the Supreme Court on Monday. A three-judge bench, headed by Justice S J Mukhopadhay, of the High Court had ordered on March 18 the suspension of former Joint Commissioner M Rama Subramani (Chennai North) and Additional Commissioner (law and order) A K Viswanathan, who were at the helm of affairs when the police stormed into the High Court and lathi charged the lawyers. In the incident some High Court judges were also reportedly assaulted. Order of the suspension was passed as the Tamil Nadu government in its affidavit named the two senior IPS officers. The Karunanidhi government has not suspended the two officers till now despite the directions of the High Court to place them under suspension. To ensure a free and fair inquiry into the incident, lawyers in Tamil Nadu had gone on indefinite strike demanding action against the police officials. The High Court had also directed the lawyers to call off their strike immediately holding that they had no right to strike work. The officers, are likely to file the petition against the High Court’s directives and the matter may be got listed in the mentioning list on March 24 or 25 for urgent hearing. The officers will pray for interim stay against the operation of the impugned order of the High Court till the final disposal of their petition.
