3/23/2009 The Supreme Court declined to direct Orissa government not to forcibly close down the relief camps for the victims of Kandhamal violence in the state. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, however, fixed April 6 for hearing the petition filed by Keshmati Pradhan, challenging Orissa High Court’s order refusing to entertain the petition. The apex court also turned down the request of Parshant Bhusan, counsel for the petitioner to issue notice to state of Orissa on the petition and said it will consider the petition on April 6, along with other petitions already pending in this court. Christian tribals in Kandhamal district were the main victims of the violence allegedly perpetrated by Bajrang Dal activist, following the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others in August last year. Mr Bhusan earlier contended that the state government was forcibly closing down the relief camps to compel them to return to their villages without providing any protection or security to their lives and properties.
