The Supreme Court will hear a petition filed by BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi challenging the imposition of National Security Act (NSA) on him by Mayawati government. Senior counsel Mukul Rohantgi today mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan for urgent hearing and informed the court that the petition was going to be filed by 1530 hrs. Justice Balakrishnan said if the petition will be filed today, then it will be included in the mentioning list tomorrow. According to petitioner Mr Gandhi, the use of NSA against him was an act of political witch hunting by his political opponents. Mr Gandhi has surrendered before the Pilibhit court last Saturday after the case was registered against him under section 153(A) of IPC for his hate speeches and was later arrested under NSA. He has been shifted from Pilibhit to Etah jail for security reasons after receiving alleged threat to his life from Mafia Don Chota Shakeel. The Centre had already dissociated itself from the controversy of imposing NSA on Mr Gandhi, son of Maneka Gandhi, who has been three times MP from Pilibhit. She has also described the imposition of NSA against her son as an act of political vendetta. NSA is imposed only when a person has become threat to national security or social peace and tranquility and he cannot ask for bail for one year.
