judges, lawyers join 'green rally'

Senior judges and lawyers here on Thursday rallied for oil and water conservation and joined a cycle march to encourage young environment activists. Eighteen judges and 200 advocates of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh, joined this rally to provide impetus to the Go Green movement run by the Asia Pacific Jurist Association (APJA). "Following the footsteps of the Supreme Court, the green bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court is actively taking up matters related to environment protection and conservation," Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur said after flagging off the rally. He said there should be a rational use of vehicles in the city and people should adopt the habits of walking and cycling for short distances, reports IANS. "We have to make immediate efforts to save environment and declining petroleum and water resources. We should promote the routine of car-pooling," APJA President Justice Surya Kant said. There should be a weekly-off for vehicles in the city, saying 'no' to honking on the roads and motivating more and more people to use bicycle for their daily work, Kant said. Chandigarh has the highest density of vehicles in the country. There are more than 750,000 vehicles for nearly 1.1 million people in the city.
