The Supreme Court declined to give early hearing to a petition challenging the decision of the organisers of IPL Cricket tournament to shift it to South Africa. A bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, declined the request of the petitioners Harshvardhan Surana and Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal, who appeared in person. Their main contention was that since the tournament is starting from April 18, the petition required urgent hearing as it will become in-fructuous if it is not heard early. The court, however, did not agree and said there was no urgency involved in the matter. The petitioners have also prayed to the court to restrain the organisers of IPL tournament from organising it in South Africa instead of India. The apex court will, however, hear the petition on April 20. CEO of IPL Lalit Modi and the BCCI decided to shift the venue of the tournament to South Africa when several state governments refused to provide security for the matches in view of the April-May general election since the dates of the tournament and polling were clashing. The Center also made it clear to the organisers of IPL that elections were more important than the cricket tournament.
