Dismissing the petition filed by an advocate, at the admission stage itself, the first bench comprising Chief Justices H L Gokhale and D Murugesan said the increase or reduction of bus fares was a policy decision of the government and the court could not interfere in it.

In his petition, A T Jayaraman, also a social activist, submitted the Transport Corporations in the state had reduced the bus fares at the time of Parliament elections held in May. When the Election Commission interfered, the state government again increased the bus fares. The petitioners sought a direction to the state government to reduce the bus fares immediately.

The bench also directed the petitioner to make his representation to the government.
