The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the government for permitting law colleges, some of which are run in basements and rooftops, without even basic infrastructural facilities saying "you are playing with the lives of students".

"It's strange that you are granting permission even for those law colleges which are run on basements and rooftops and do not have libararies or faculties? You are playing with the lives of the students," a vacation bench of Jutices Dalveer Bhandari and Asok Kumar Ganguly observed.

The bench asked the Attorney General to assist the court in the matter which was posted for further hearing at a later date.

The apex court made the remarks while dealing with an appeal filed by the Bar Council of India challenging a direction passed by the Madhya Pradesh High Court to grant admission to Bonnie Foi Law College.

Despite the BCI's refusal to accord recognition to the college for non-fulfillment of certain conditions, the high court had directed grant of recognition on the basis of a report submitted by a two-member advocate committee appointed by it.

The BCI had challenged the direction before the apex court which last year stayed the high court order.
