Gauhati HC allows MHRD to present its views tomorrow

The Gauhati High Court, Agartala bench, has allowed Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to present their views tomorrow, with regard to admission in the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Agartala this year.

The MHRD sought two weeks time to clarify it’s stand on cut-off marks for admission in the institute yesterday, when the case came up for hearing following the demand of the guardian forum to maintain last year’s cut-off marks in AIEEE for the Tripura students.

However, the court allowed only two days to MHRD because after July 17 all the reserved seats for Tripura would be opened for admission and as a result more than one hundred students of the state could not seek admission.

The admission procedure got complicated following MHRD’s decision to increase the cut-off marks from 31 to 100 this year leaving a number of seats vacant.

The Tripura government had also urged the Centre to review its decision to ensure the admission of the students in the institute.

State Higher Education Minister Anil Sarkar had met his Central counterpart Kapil Sibal last month and requested him to bring down the cut-off marks to 31, like the previous year.

Only 56 students, covered by the state quota, have secured qualifying marks in the AIEEE and may seek admission in the NIT this year even though it has a capacity of 210 students.
