The Supreme Court refused to entertain a PIL seeking directions to the Union Government to set up an expert committee to examine if Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) were tamper-proof.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishanan and Mr Justice P Sadasivam told the petitioner V V Rao and others to approach the Election Commissioner of India for the purpose.
Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani had raised the issue alleging that EVM can be tampered with and elections be manipulated and rigged.
He has demanded that the elections should be held through ballot paper and EVM should not be used.
Mr V V Rao, an engineer and also a member of Hyderabad based Election Watch Group had pleaded before the court that several experts have raised doubts about the EVM and expressed apprehensions that the machine can be manipulated to rigg elections.
