Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in the State will soon have a patent filing facility as the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology is launching an initiative in this direction. Five clusters covering food, handicrafts, engineering, biotechnology and electronics sectors are being established by the Council to create awareness among the industrial units about patent filing. S. Vincent, Member Secretary of the Council, told The Hindu here on Sunday that various universities would be involved in guiding the MSMEs towards filing of patents for their products. “The Patent Information Cell in the Council would jointly work with the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises to identify the Intellectual Property (IP) needs of industries,” he said. A communication would be sent to the patent information cells in universities and to the industrial bodies to take a lead role in this initiative. According to Dr. Vincent, the Patent Information Cell will provide legal and financial assistance for the MSMEs to obtain patents and protect them. Facilitation centres will come up at different places where the five sectors identified as clusters for the patent purpose have a strong presence. Shortly, the Council will take steps for organising meetings with Cluster Development Executives.
