Clarification by the Ministry of Minority Affairs on Some Aspects of Proposed Legislation to Amend the Wakf Act, 1995; and the Right to Education Act
Reports insome newspapers regarding proceedings of the All India Muslim Personal LawBoard held in Hyderabad seem to distort some aspects of proposed legislation toamend The Wakf Act, 1995 and Right to Education Act. There is no question of departurefrom fundamental principles of noninterference in the constitutional rights ofminority institutions be their educational, religious or charitable.
All matters regarding the amendments tothe Wakf Act are now before the Select Committee of Rajya Sabha and it is bothpointless and inappropriate to raise doubts about those amendments beingdebated in the Lok Sabha on a Friday afternoon. It might be recalled that afterseveral days of Lok Sabha not functioning a slot was fortunately made availablejust before Lok Sabha adjourned sine die. Records will show that severalimportant Muslim Members of Parliament contributed to the debate and the Billwas passed unanimously. The Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha that has severalleading Muslim MPs including a Member of the All India Muslim Personal LawBoard will give its report shortly.
