SC Orders UP Govt To File Affidavit In Police Recruitment Scam 2/14/2009 The Supreme Court directed the Mayawati government to file a detailed affidavit giving sequence of the steps leading to the Uttar Pradesh DGP being given power to appoint a committee of senior police officers to inquire into the state Police recruitment scam involving the appointment of 22,500 police constables by the previous government. A bench comprising Justices D K Jain and R M Lodha issued the directions to the state government to file the affidavit after hearing senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for the government, who pleaded that the decision was taken by the state Cabinet on October 10, 2007 giving power to the state DGP to appoint the committee of senior police officers to look into the scandal. The state government moved the apex court against the decision of the Allahabad High Court declaring the committee of senior officers was illegal as some of them were also involved in the recruitment process. The Mayawati government had sacked over 18000 police constables as it found that there was large-scale bungling in the recruitment as many constables did not even fulfill the eligibility like physical fitness, qualification and height. The majority of the constables recruited belonged to a single caste. The apex court has fixed February 27 as the next date of hearing of the case. UNI
