Dear Visitor,

Interface with the law is an inevitable part of the life of the citizenry Law is meant to be an enabling instrument for any society and is acknowledged almost universally as an end for meeting justice to people in every sense of the word. However, given the social economic and political milieu in India, it very often does not serve this purpose. On the contrary it is used to oppress people who are marginalized Inspite of progressive legislation supported by equally progressive rulings from the Courts, the law as contained in statutes and judgment rarely percolates down to the cutting edge situations, leaving the picture on the ground for people to access justice on of extreme difficulty, hardship and trauma in approaching and reaching the instruments for accessing justice in this environment the role of the civil administration in promotion of good practices which contribute positively to justice delivery is on of paramount importance. Even though legal literacy forms the core of the programme, legal counseling and legal aid are natural corollaries to the work. The specific problems and cases discussed in the workshops are dealt with separately either through legal counseling or legal aid where required. The counseling is done at the community level where only a short intervention is required. Here, the Savigya team listens to the problems and explains the legal aspects to the concerned person. On other cases, people come to savigya para legal clinic and we hold legal counselling sessions which involve explaining the legal choices, instilling confidence in the person to deal with the situation and also explaining basic legal procedures, which helps them to deal with their lawyers and cases. We also get queries through our website to which we send written advice and opinions. (Please visit us on https://www.savigya.org ) The legal aid provided by savigya ranges from helping people to write simple letters and application to authorities filling in forms, sending legal notices to filing and monitoring cases in court. People unable to engage lawyers are referred to the lawyers with whom we work and sometimes bear the filing costs. Savigya works for the goal of creating socio-legal awareness and the basic understanding that the day people become conscious of their rights and laws, it would immediately bring in a time of lesser atrocities and exploitation. with the view of educating all,it becomes very essential to broaden the outreach through different groups. Volunteers from amongst the youth are on such group who can effectively disperse legal information at the grassroots. reach through different groups.
Women ad children have always been a special focus of all of savigya's work having early in our interactions realised their special vulnerability, However, as our programme for issues, related to gender such as women's political participation, domestic violence, and children's problems such as child labour and other children who are exposed to deprivation or violence, Thus started the Women and Children Programme fondly nicknamed "Tejaswini".
