From the desk of Mr. K.R.Bulchandani:
When I go down my memory lane, to be exact July 1970, as Sales Officer in Air India, just about 6 months old in the esteemed job, when I was barely 25 years of age, I obtained Sanad from Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. Immediately, I tendered my letter of resignation to the Area Manager. I was summoned by the Manager. With bewilderment, he queried me on my plans. As young, enthusiastic, I spelt out my ambitions in legal profession. Elderly as he was, he advised : “Do not be a fool, sky here is a limit for you”. Lured I was, but stubborn also. I retorted “yes, I may be a wise fool”. And my legal journey in the legal profession commenced.
Away from a life of 5 star luxury, I was severely bitten by bugs in the Magistrate’s Court at Mazgaon where I was first led by my Learned Senior. This was signal to me of rough, tough and uphill journey. Was I a fool or a wise fool ?
I had to prove. This made me firm. When going gets tough, tough get going. But easier said than done. Rightly said, first you have to set your foot in the crowded legal profession. Then you do not go up by the staircase but by the lift. To set first foot and be recognized, patience was a key. My patience was however stretched to 10 long years, when I had a life time opportunity to oppose none other than Mr. Ram Jethmalani, a well known Senior Criminal Advocate. For a change, he was holding brief on an issue under Imports and Exports Policy. I was a newly appointed Junior Counsel on Union of India panel. Battery of Advocates, both Seniors and Juniors were assisting Mr. Ram Jethmalani. I was one, only and lonely Junior Counsel for Union of India with faith reposed in me by my instructing Law Officer.
What would have been a cake walk for Union of India with gross adverse facts which Mr. Ram Jethmalani was to counter, but genius that he has been always, he twisted and interpreted the provisions of Import and Export Policy to the advantage of his clients. Luckily for me, the Court adjourned for the day. With assistance of Law Officer and Officers of the department I burnt my night lamp. Next sunrise was to decide my career.
As destiny would have it, with hard work and little knowledge, lots of luck was to be with me that day. I was destined to make my mark in the profession and set my first foot. There I was before the Division Bench of the Hon’ble High Court putting across my submissions, in the pin drop silenced court room. My Law Officer was asked about me, as later I learnt, who is this Counsel? Impressed that he was with my continued submissions to the Court, he answered the querist : “My Rs.90/- Counsel against Rs.90,000.00 Counsel”. And there I was victorious against a legend which made me touch the ceiling. Though prosecutions were ordered to be expedited by High Court against the clients of Mr. Ram Jethmalani, he in all humility and his greatness made a statement before the Learned Judges before departing from the court premises : “My Lords, I will be failing in my duties, if I do not acknowledge the authority of my learned friend on Import Export Policy”. This statement made me resolve to be always rooted and be humble in the hour of one’s success. His clients, who later were my clients, introduced me to others “meet our Ram Jethmalani”.
Since then I, my colleagues, Associates with staff of my firm, Messrs Kamal & Co., have never looked back. Integrity, hard work and devotion to my clients and their cases have been our bounden duty.
