Registrars to ascertain that notice and certificate are understood byIndian Christians.
57.Registrars to ascertain that notice and certificate areunderstood by Indian Christians.-When any 1*[Indian] Christian aboutto be married gives a notice of marriage, or applies for a certificatefrom a Marriage Registrar, such Marriage Registrar shall ascertainwhether the said 1*[Indian] Christian understands the Englishlanguage, and, if he does not, the Marriage Registrar shall translate,or cause to be translated, such notice or certificate, or both ofthem, as the case may be, to such 1*[Indian] Christian into a languagewhich he understands; or the Marriage Registrar shall otherwise ascertain whether the1*[Indian] Christian is cognizant of the purport and effect of thesaid notice and certificate.
