STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS " The Lushai Hills District is one of the six autonomous districts in the tribal areas of Assam specified in Pan A of the Table appended to Paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution, The district is largely inhabited by tribes who are collectively known as "Mizos" - "Lusei" being one of these tribes. There has, therefore, been a demand that the district should be renamed "Mizo District"; the Hills will continue to be called 'Lushai Hills' - The present Bill is intended to achieve this purpose."- Gaz. of India, 1954, Extra., Pt. II, section 2, p. 2.

An Act to change the name of the Lushai Hills District. BE it enacted by Parliament as follows:-

SECTION 01: SHORT TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT

(1) This Act may be called The Lushai Hills District (Change of Name) Act, 1954.

(2) It shall come into force on such date1as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
