The Constitution breaks the governmental power between the President, Congress, the courts and the states. Even if they succeed at doing that, the people can vote the President and Congress out next time around, so destructive cohesion rarely lasts beyond the next election cycle. Even at the state level, powers are distributed across the governor, state congress and courts and the local counties and cities and townships.

All of the true power is distributed to the people through elections, the bill of rights and property rights.

What does this mean? It's very, very difficult for any one person to have a significantly negative impact on your life because to do so, they'd have to convince the Congress and the Courts to go along with them and that's tough. The President of the US, while considered the leader of the free world, is really not that powerful. And it's a good thing, few of us would want any politician to have too much say about how we live our lives.

But, now take away all of those checks and balances and you get a dictatorship, kingdom or warlord situation where the power goes from the people to the dictator. The citizens essentially become slaves to serve the whims of the dictator. Sure, some dictators are actually nice, but eventually you get a dictator that isn't and you're S.O.L. until another dictator with a bigger gun takes over or the people fight for their freedom as in the US Revolutionary War.
