The term "deepfake" itself combines "deep learning" with "fake," highlighting that deep-learning artificial intelligence algorithms are utilized to create realistic fraudulent media. Technically, deepfake works with relatively advanced machine learning frameworks, particularly deep neural networks, to analyze a collection of already available images, videos, or audio files of an individual and generate new, artificial material featuring that person saying or doing things that they never really said or did. The technology behind it can swap faces, manipulate lip movements to match new audio, or even generate entirely new video or audio from scratch that mimics a person's appearance and voice with startling accuracy. Brief history, and technological advancements Manipulating visual media is not a new concept because methods for old media, more specifically for photos and video editing, have been around for decades. 
Deepfakes, as they are known today, trace their origin back to late 2017 when someone on Reddit circulated videos containing exchanged faces, done with methodologies of deep learning. This was quite an improvement for conventional methods of editing, making the creation of spoofed media much more automated, realistic, and scalable in practice than ever before. This triggered rapid advancement in the technology: 

  1. 2018-2019: Earlier deepfake algorithms needed thousands of images to train the models coming up with convincing fakes. Researchers and developers improved on such algorithms so that they needed less training data.

Marketing and Advertisement, Companies are exploring the area of personalized advertising by using deepfake to create content targeted to a particular set of viewers. Art and Creative Expression, Artists have been using deepfakes as a new type of tool to make their art and deliver social comments. Accessibility: Voice mimicking technologies are used for creating artificial voices for users who have lost their ability to speak.
Yet, the technology has some worrying applications, Disinformation and Political Manipulation: Deepfakes can be used to create fake news or influence public opinion. Involuntary Pornography: The technology has been put to use to create pornographic content about people without their consent. Financial Fraud: Instances have been recorded wherein voice-based deepfakes were used to impersonate corporate business leaders in committing financial frauds. Identity Theft and Impersonation: Deepfake technology can create false identities or even impersonate the actual individual for many malicious purposes. The advanced technology is only going to increase the applications—positive and negative. —thereby introducing constant hindrances to the law and ethics. The impact on evidentiary standards in legal environments raises significant issues in relation to the authentication of electronic evidence. The rise of deepfake technology has substantially increased the uncertainties related to determining the authenticity of electronic evidence in law.
Traditional methods used to determine the credibility and reliability of audio, video, or photographic evidence are increasingly inadequate when faced with sophisticated AI-generated evidence. Best Evidence Rule: In some jurisdictions, one may question a deepfake as an "original" document in relation to the best evidence rule. Hearsay Considerations: There may be hurdles in admitting deepfake content under the hearsay laws, especially when it will purport to speak of comments out of court. Prejudicial Effect: Courts must ensure the potential prejudicial effects of the admissibility of deepfake evidence are not more significant than the probative value.

  2. Tamil Nadu Incident: Duwaraka Prabhakaran Deepfake 
    Much more disquieting was the accident where a deepfake video surfaced supposedly showing Duwaraka Prabhakaran, who had died in 2009. This case proved how deepfake technology could be used to manipulate not only current but also historical events. It held the emotional resonance of such fabrications within sensitive political contexts such as the aftermath of the Sri Lankan civil war.     Ranveer Singh and Aamir Khan, Deep fake videos of Ranveer Singh and Aamir Khan going viral and promoting a political party they never endorsed is such an example of how celebrities' images were misused for political mileage. The above case exemplifies how deepfakes can be used to exploit public figures' influence to swing public opinion. The fact that both actors went ahead and filed police complaints shows how much of a legal hassle and personal stress the unauthorized use of one's likeness can amount to. Definition Problems: Defining with precision—in legal terms—what a deepfake is is really hard, considering how varied the AI-generated, manipulated content has been. Unintended Consequences: A broader regulation could stifle innovation or legitimate uses of AI in content creation. Detection Limitations:
