41-Year-Old Unemployed Oxford Graduate Sues Parents For Lifelong Maintenance

OVERVIEW

Faiz Siddiqui, an Oxford graduate, filed a suit against his parents in the Courts of Appeal seeking lifelong financial maintenance from them.

BRIEF ACCOUNT

Siddiqui is 41 and a trained lawyer with a degree from Oxford University, and submitted that he is completely economically dependent on his wealthy parents.

The plea filed by Siddiqui could result in alteration of rights of parents in all of UK. He claims lifelong maintenance from his parents as a result of being a ‘vulnerable’ grown-up child due to health issues, stating that prevention of financial support would be a violation of his human rights. 

BACKGROUND

The applicant’s parents reside in Dubai and have provided him with a rent-free apartment near London’s Hyde Park worth 1 million pounds for the past 20 years. They have also been providing for him by paying his bills. However, they now wish to discontinue the fund supply following a family quarrel. 

Siddiqui had been a practicing lawyer at the top law firms up till 2011. He was provided with a weekly amount exceeding 400 pounds (Rs. 40,500) by his parents, Rakshanda and Javed Siddiqui, aged 69 and 71 respectively.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Advocate Justin Warshaw QC, representing the parents reported The Sun that the ‘long-suffering parents’ have their own viewpoint regarding the provisions and maintenance of their ‘difficult, demanding and pertinacious son’.
The case had been rejected by a top family court judge last year and shall now be presented before the Court of Appeals.
