Ajmal Amir Kasab Trial: Nikam submits 312 draft charges

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam submitted before a designated court the 312-draft charges against all 47, including lone arrested Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab, Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmad, accused in the 26/11 terror attacks on the city. The accused also included all the nine deceased of the ten-member Pakistani terrorist gang, that besieged the city for 60 hours during the November 26 attacks, and another 35 wanted, all residents of Pakistan. The draft charges were submitted before designated court judge M L Tahiliyani. The charges levelled against the 26/11 accused are--waging war against India, criminal conspiracy, collecting arms and ammunition, to create terror in the minds of the Indian’s and weaken the country’s economy, killing foreign nationals, destabilizing the Indian government, capture Jammu and Kashmir, murder and attempt to murder. Earlier, continuing the opening of the trial, Mr Nikam said Kasab’s co-accused Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin were the members of the 26/11 conspiracy, that was hatched in Pakistan. He further said both Fahim and Sabauddin, accused of reconnaissance, met in neighboring Nepal, where the former had handed over the maps of several important Indian cities to Sabauddin following which the latter might have given those to Zakkir Rehman Lakhvi, brain behind the terror attacks, in Pakistan. Mr Nikam also said Lakhvi had asked the 10-member terrorist gang to destroy the maps after reaching the target area, however, Kasab’s partner Abu Ismail, who was killed by the police forces during an encounter near the Marine Drive area, had not destroyed the map as they were yet to reach their destined Malabar Hills, where they were supposed to attack the Raj Bhawan. The public prosecutor also today submitted four mobile numbers, of which three were used by the accused, and the fourth number has been traced to a place in Pakistan. He also produced the details of the telephonic conversation, that was recorded by the investigating agency. Mr Nikam said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on the request of Indian government, had given some clinching evidence pertaining to the purchase of the cell phones, which is said to have been purchased in New Jersy. The terrorist strike on the city in November last had claimed the lives of more than 170 people leaving over 300 injured.
