Matter pertains to clashes between police and lawyers on High Court campus A Division Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday recused itself from the case relating to the incidents on the High Court premises on February 19 this year. The matter pertains to clashes between the police and lawyers that had left several persons injured. Following the incidents, a three-member Bench, comprising Justices S.J. Mukhopadhaya, V. Dhanapalan and K. Chandru, was constituted. It had suggested the suspension of the then Additional Commissioner of Police and the Joint Commissioner, North Zone. Aggrieved, the two police officers moved the Supreme Court, which asked them to approach the High Court. They are yet to move the High Court. Meanwhile, a Bench comprising Mr. Justice Mukhopadhaya and Mr. Justice Chandru was specially constituted to hear the case relating to the incidents. When the matter came up, Mr. Justice Mukhopadhaya said Mr. Justice Chandru had already recused himself from all the cases by writing to the Chief Justice March 25. He was also not on the Division Bench. He said the case may be “listed before a Bench in which none of us is a member, after necessary orders of the Honourable Chief Justice.” A total of eight petitions had been posted before the Bench.
