The Centre has rejected the recommendation of the 205th Law Commission to reduce the marriage age of men from 21 to 18 years. Rajya Sabha member from Goa Shantaram Naik in a statement said the Centre was in view that if the age of 18 years was retained for the boys and the girls, it was likely that girls younger than 18 years will be married to boys of 18 years. He got this reply from the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry to his query on the subject recently, The government had examined the 205th Report of the Law Commission and the age difference for boys (18 years) was deliberately inserted keeping in view social realities, he further said.
