WRIT PETITION FILED AGAINST UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS

A writ petition has been filed by aggrieved Law Students of the University of Madras against its decision to stop conducting B.L. Exams related to old students of erstwhile Madras Law College and Government Law colleges in the State.  It may be noted that consequent upon formation of a separate Law University since 2000 as Dr.Ambetkar Law University, Madras University is reported to have been conducting B.L. exams till Oct 2010 for the benefit of old students who were keeping arrears on account of various reasons like Employment, Transfer, ill-health, etc.  However, Madras University has collected Rs.25000/- from every law student during August 2010 when it last enrolled old candidates for B.L. exams.  But it failed to notify that it is the final chance for old students to clear the arrears subjects.  It has also failed to reply or respond to representations submitted to the university regarding the exam schedule as many candidates were located out of station. Since no major announcement or press publication or website notification made by the University many candidates are not even aware of the conduct of B.L. exams by University of Madras which made them to skip without their fault.  When they approached for conduct of B.L. exams as in the case of old M.L. students, they were declined verbally. On continuous follow-up some of them have received a formal printed letter from University conveying its decision not to conduct the exams.  Many students have personally represented the matter to Controller of Exams, Registrar, Vice-Chancellor of University besides taking up the matter with the CM’s Secretariat to the level of Law Minister.  Since the decision has aggrieved many law students who are even left with a single paper in the B.L. curriculum and the University unilaterally taking a decision to stop conduct of exams without any prior notification, Mr. G.Purushothaman and Mr. Ravichandran has filed a case seeking University to conduct the B.L. exams.  Some students have already represented the matter to get them absorbed in the fresh curriculum of Dr.Ambetkar Law University so that they can write the pending papers on migration from University of Madras.
