The updating of the National Population Register (NPR) and the first phase of Census 2021 have been postponed indefinitely due to the 21-day lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Home Ministry had recently stated that the preparation for the Census 2021, which was to be conducted in two phases -– house listing  and housing census during April-September and population enumeration during February 9 to 28 —and updating of NPR, which was to be done along phase I of Census 2021, were at its peak and were to begin from April 1st till September 30th.

The census and NPR exercise require the enumerators to visit every household and visit people, because of which, this exercise was not possible given the present circumstances. Hence, the government took the decision to postpone it.
