What Is The Case

  • A Delhi court today dismissed the Delhi Police's request for a three-day extension of custody for two-time Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the suspected death of a teenage wrestler at Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium and ordered him to be held in judicial custody for nine days.
  • Sushil Kumar was taken into judicial custody for 14 days after being hauled before Metropolitan Magistrate Rashmi Gupta at the end of his four-day police detention.

Custody

  • Sushil Kumar faces murder, culpable homicide, and kidnapping allegations. On May 23, the international wrestler was apprehended. Following his detention, the court put him in police prison for six days, which was then extended for another four days.
  • On the nights of May 4 and 5, Sushil Kumar and his colleagues allegedly assaulted wrestler Sagar Dhankar and two of his pals, Sonu and Amit Kumar. Later, Sagar died as a result of his injuries.
  • On May 23, the international wrestler was apprehended in the Mundka district of outer Delhi, along with co-accused Ajay Kumar. So far, nine persons, including Kumar, have been arrested in connection with the event, according to police. Kumar, according to police, has been evasive and has refused to cooperate with investigators throughout questioning. A video appeared on social media on Thursday purporting to show Kumar and his colleagues allegedly assaulting another man with sticks. Kumar and his colleagues are allegedly shown in the video with sticks in their hands, as the injured man lies on the ground.
  • Four acquaintances of Kumar, who were allegedly involved in the alleged property dispute case that led to the death of the 23-year-old Sagar, were arrested on Wednesday morning, according to police. Raids were carried out in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Punjab by several teams, including the Crime Branch and four Special Cell teams.
