CJI’s Opinions

  • The Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana during his speech at the launch of Coffee Table Book by the Society for Indian Law Firms (SILF) urged the law firms to take up pro-bono cases and give opportunities to those who cannot reach the firms.
  • He urged to increase “inclusivity and diversity” and provide opportunities to first-generation lawyers beyond Tier-1 cities.
  • More equitable and holistic solutions can be brought to the table with diverse opinions.
  • He emphasized on retaining more female lawyers and also on the need of providing scholarships and other competitive ways to find talent in law schools.
  • He stated that some of the best lawyers of our country hail from small towns and villages with all the barriers, and competition with international standards should not drift the focus from looking inside first.

Praises for the Indian Law Firms

  • He applauded the efforts by SILF to increase and fulfil the social commitments and suggested the formulation of new policies and commitments.
  • He also praised the growth and contribution of the Indian law firms and their specialized services.
  • The services of the law firms are lending a helping hand to the entrepreneurs and business houses.
  • The law firms have been in the forefront even during the pandemic and helped a lot with the economy of the country.

Proposals by the CJI

  • He proposed for training of present and future lawyers to prepare them for the changing nature of legal profession.
  • He also proposed for the involvement of local talent from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in disputes arising in the emerging business hubs.
  • Enhancing the community outreach would help tackle the misconception of law firms being only for the rich.
  • The law firms should contribute towards constitutional aspirants.
