"" WEB TERRORISM "" GOOGLE HAUNTED BY WEB ATTACKERS 20 Dec 2008, 1212 hrs IST, Jessica Mehroin Irani, ET Bureau MUMBAI: No one is safe on the internet. Not even Google. Web attackers have started paying the search engine to host their malicious websites. Danger in portals | Heard of clickjacking? More Pictures Websense Security Labs has discovered a sponsored malicious link hosted by Google. According to industry experts, this is for the first time that reputations of legitimate, popular applications and online services are being abused to serve and help malware authors to spread malicious software. While a user has to do its own due diligence, analysts say, Google has to take responsibility for the links on its ad network. Frost & Sullivan deputy director (ICT practice) Kaustubh Dhavse said: “This is web terrorism! Google is providing the platform to park these deceitful URLs and it needs to be checked by them.” KPMG executive director Akhilesh Tuteja said that this was a level-two malware which damages or disrupts the system only after downloading it from the site and can’t be detected that easily. However, Google did not disclose to ET, whether there is a legal contract between the two parties. Google in its defence said that this problem wasn’t unique to them. “Google is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our users and advertisers. We actively work to detect and remove sites that serve malware in our ad network, and we immediately suspend accounts found to contain ads that point to sites that install malware. As such, we’ve added this site to our malware list and are in the process of removing any offending sites from our ad network,” said a company spokesperson in an e-mail.
