EVENING COURTS WILL BE A REALITY SOON: CJ 18 Jan 2009, 1747 hrs IST MYSORE: Karnataka high court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran on Sunday revealed that the process for constitution of evening courts is in progress and they will soon be a reality. He told reporters here that the agencies involved in the setting up of evening courts, including the government, are working in the right direction and soon the system will be in place. Asked about pendencies in the courts, the Chief Justice said recently the courts, in a drive, settled 2,33,454 cases by working 29 days a month. “This is a big achievement in the direction of reducing pending cases. Even fast track courts and Lok Adalats are contributing positively to reduce the pendencies,” he added. Chief Justice said the aim of the judiciary is to provide timely inexpensive unpolluted speedy justice to justice seekers and this is being carried out in a transparent way in Karnataka. To a question, the Chief Justice said it is the supreme court which decides the issue of circuit benches and he has no authority to comment on them. "Setting up of circuit Benches has been done after a long consideration and process," he said indicating that there is no idea before the high court or supreme court on the reported closure of circuit benches in the state following lack of work load on them. Courts will initiate action to speed up the trial of cases connected with the poor and downtrodden in the society if anybody brought to the notice of the presiding officers that the trial is being delayed unnecessarily. There is a system in place and that should take care of the incidents of government departments not implementing the rulings of law courts, he said when a report pointed out at the issue of government departments not abiding by the court judgements. Later, addressing the regional conference of judicial officers, the Chief Justice urged the judicial officers to make all efforts to dispose off pending cases speedily. "Judges should take into consideration the importance of justice to the litigants and this should guide them in disposing off the cases''.
