The Supreme Court expressed serious concern and anguish over the increasing use of alcohol amongst students which is mainly responsible for increasing incidents of harassment and torture of freshers by seniors in the name of ragging in the educational institutions. A Bench comprising Justices Arigit Pasayat and Asok Kumar Ganguly, while adjourning the hearing of the case till April 27, directed those State Governments who had not responded to the directions of the apex court to suggest ways for checking the menace of ragging in universities and colleges, to file their response before the next date of hearing. It may be noted here that the SC appointed committee headed by former CBI Director R K Raghvan had also blamed free flow of liqour in university campuses and colleges and suggested setting up of centralised helpline for the victims of ragging. It is worth mentioning that a 19-year-old first year student of medical sciences in a Medical college of Himachal Pradesh Aman Kachroo was thrashed to death by four seniors in the dead of night when they were fully drunk.
