The Supreme Court has ordered the SIT probing post-Godhra riots of 2002, to investigate the killing of alleged gangster Soharabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter in Gujaratafter it found "certain loose ends" in chargesheet filed by the state.

"There are many loose ends in the chargesheet. We will refer it to the SIT," a bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam said on Monday while asking Gujarat government to file its response on the issue and posted the matter for further hearing to 11th September.

Sohrabuddin, his wife Kauser Bi and another accomplice believed to be Tulsiram Prajapati were killed by Gujarat police in a fake encounter in November 2005.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up on an order by the apex court.

The state had admitted that Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter and suspended some of it senior police officers for their alleged role.

Senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi, appearing for the state government, admitted on Monday again during the hearing that the encounter was fake.

The apex court bench also directed the state to pay an interim compensation to the family of Sheikh but refrained from fixing the amount after senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi assured the court that he would come out with the "quantum" to be paid after seeking instructions from the state government.
