The state had admitted that Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter and suspended some of it senior police officers for their alleged role.
Senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi, appearing for the state government, admitted on Monday again during the hearing that the encounter was fake.
The apex court bench also directed the state to pay an interim compensation to the family of Sheikh but refrained from fixing the amount after senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi assured the court that he would come out with the "quantum" to be paid after seeking instructions from the state government.
