Admitting that lot of vacancies existed for judges posts in various courts, Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan today said there was a twofold increase in the requirement. Inaugurating a 'Continuous Lok Adalat' at Madurai Bench of Madras High Court here he said in Tamil Nadu alone 400 vacancies existed in various courts and efforts were on to fill up atleast 200, by the Centre. Hoping that the vacancies would be filled up soon he said infrastructure facilities in court buildings were good in Tamil Nadu. He appealed to the Centre and the state governments to allocate more funds for the development of judiciary and said atleast one percent of the GDP should be allocated for judiciary. He said lack of infrastructure and vacancies in the judiciary were the reasons for pendency of cases. He said however, buildings alone do not make a High Court. People working there, the Bar and the advocates should make it a temple of justice and make people believe that they will get justice. He also said Lok Adalats was one of the ways to bring down the number of pending cases. In his address Justice P Sadasivam, Judge of Supreme Court recommended that state governments should form a high level committee to resolve disputes between government departments and undertakings. He said officials should be encouraged to participate in the Lok Adalats. By Ms.Bobby Aanand, Metropolitan Jury.
