NEWS FLASH

Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court has been found guilty of corruption by a parliamentary committee. Parliament will now begin the process to impeach him.

The three-member committee was set up in March 2009, after Sitaram Yechury and more than 50 other Rajya Sabha MPs asked for Sen to be dismissed because he had misused funds that he was responsible for as a lawyer.

Justice Sen became a judge of the Calcutta High Court in December, 2003. It’s alleged that in 1984, Sen was appointed a receiver of the court in a civil suit. In this capacity, he was in charge of funds related to the case, and was meant to set them aside in a separate bank account. Instead, even after his promotion to judge, the money remained in an account in his name.
