Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL), Mumbai is proud to present its flagship event to you “Reliance Industries Limited presents 5th Government Law College International Law Summit, Government Law College, Mumbai.

Government Law College, Mumbai enjoys the distinction of being the oldest law school in Asia and has, since its inception in 1855, essayed a seminal role in the evolution of the legal and judicial landscape of India. Generations of legal luminaries, nurtured at Government Law College, have made remarkable contributions to the evolution of Indian jurisprudence.

SPIL, Mumbai  has endeavored for the past four years to promote International Law among the students and legal fraternity alike through its flagship event, the “International Law Summit”. In line with its past tradition, SPIL, Mumbai will be hosting the “5thGovernment Law College International Law Summit” with its theme "International Investment Law",  from 31st January to 2nd February, 2014. The event this year is presented by the corporate giant Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), which has been involved in multi-facetious off-shore investments into many foreign holdings.

The three day Summit is set to transcend the standards set by its earlier editions and has been made possible by the joint patronage and constant support of our sponsors. A student body affiliated with the International Law Student Association, Chicago and Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi, SPIL, Mumbai organizes seminars, workshops and competitions with a view to acquaint students with the nuances of International Law. The Summit is bound to find great relevance among the present scenario with the advent of Foreign Direct Investment in India and the widely discussed issue of international investment along the lines of Retrospective Tax Amendment and the parties that are embroiled in its legal battle.

DAY 1:

The 5th International Law Summit will span over a period of three days with the first day commencing with the Principal’s address, followed by the Unveiling of the Souvenir, the  Keynote Address by Hon'ble Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan, Judge, Supreme Court of India, followed by  a seminar by Mr. Somasekhar Sunderasan, Partner, J. Sagar Associates  and  seminars by various legal luminaries and stalwarts of the legal fraternity.

DAY 2:

Second day of the Summit is scheduled to take place at the offices of Nishith Desai Associates  at Bandra-Kurla Complex featuring a Keynote address  by Mr. Toby Landau, QC, Essex Court Chambers, United Kingdom, an interview  with Ms. Meg Kinnear, Secretary-General of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes(ICSID),  and a  seminar by Mr. Vyapak Desai, Partner, Nishith Desai Associates on the topic “India and its Bilateral Investment Treaty Regime”.   The day will conclude by a Paper Presentation by Mr. Alexandre Genest, PhD Scholar and part-time Professor, Ottawa University, Canada.

DAY 3:        

The finale of the Summit features a Panel Discussion on the topic  "Attracting Foreign Direct Investment: Examining the Existing Legal Framework and weighing its Consequences on the Indigenous Economy" with the following eminent panelists.
