Supreme Court appoints 4 new judges to reach it's full strength of 31 judges

The Centre has approved the appointment of J Surya Kant, J BR Gavai, Aniruddha Bose & AS Bopanna within 2 weeks of the recommendation by Supreme Court Collegium. 

It was on the 8th of May that the Supreme Court collegium recommended the elevation of J Gavai from Bombay HC and J Surya Kant, the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

Their collective appointments mean the court will have its full sanctioned strength of 31 judges.

With the appointment of Justice Gavai, who stands at Sl.No.8 in the combined seniority list of all HC judges, the SC has got a judge from the Scheduled Caste community after nine years. Justice Gavai had come in news earlier when he issued a press statement in November 2017 denying reports of foul play in the death of CBI judge B H Loya.
