Chief justice of Pakistan takes suo moto cognizance on burning of Hindu temple in Pakistan

BACKGROUND

•  The Hindu Temple here is the shrine of Hindu Saint Shri Paramhans Ji Maharaj.

•  Many locals and their leaders belonging to religious parties were displeased with the renovation and extention of the Hindu Temple.

•  On 30th December 2020, a mob charged on the temple to vandalize and remove it.

•  The mob desecrated the temple, before finally setting it on fire.

COGNIZANCE BY CHIEF JUSTICE

•  Chief Justice of Pakistan, Gulzar Ahmed took cognizance of the matter.

•  As per a report, a Member of National Assembly and patron-in-chief Pakistan Hindu Council Dr Ramesh Kumar had called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan to discussed the matter.

•  As per the reports, the Chief Justice showed “grave concern” on the matter.

•  The matter has been listed on January 5 2021.

• The Chief Justice has also directed a One-Man Commission on Minorities Rights, Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to visit the Site and submit a report on it by January 4.
