Committee set up to resolve labour strike in Bahrain

Bahrain's Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi has ordered to set up a committee Headed by Under-Secretary Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulla Al Khalifa to resolve the ongoing strike of Asian workers, including Indians, in the country. According to a Bahraini newspaper, Bahrain's Labour Minister has admitted that most of the agitating workers are being paid far less than BD 100, but are party to existing contracts, which bind them to their present emoluments. Meanwhile, the project manager of the construction company G.P. Zachariades, (GPZ), Keith Jones whose 1,800 employees are on strike, has said that a raise in salaries is not on the cards as workers have signed contracts agreeing to their current salaries. Discussions are however proceeding to resolve the matter and get the workers back to work, he added. The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) of Bahrain has supported the strike describing it a basic right of any worker. GFBTU information secretary Jaffer Khalil said that we are pained to note that workers are being paid as little as BD40 every month. According to Indian Embassy in Bahrain, Indian government has fixed the minimum wages for the Indian workers in the Bahrain to BD (Bahraini Dinar) 100 with effect from 1st March this year. According to experts, existing low wages, high labour demand, rising inflation, the tumbling value of the dollar and growing cost of living in Bahrain are some of the root causes that led to a growing number of agitations in Bahrain recently.
