Chhattisgarh HC Receives Plea To De-Recognise BJP And Cong 1/16/2009 The Chhattisgarh High Court has received a plea seeking derecognition of the Congress and BJP for tempting a large segment of the electorate with promises of subsidised rice, salt and free power during the recently-concluded Assembly polls. The petition, submitted by senior advocate V G Tamrakar, also named the Election Commission of India and State Election Commission as respondents, besides pointing out that the BJP and Congress manifests were issued between November 4 to 18. The BJP held out an assurance of a maximum 35 kg rice per month at Rs 3 per kg and salt at Re 1 per kg to Below Poverty Line families and free power -- upto 5 horsepower connections -- to farmers. In turn, the Congress promised rice at Rs 2 per kg besides free power. Mr Tamrakar submitted that the parties moves were ultra vires of the Constitution. UNI
