Replying to the opening address of the case by special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, defence advocate Ejaz Naqvi, who is representing Sabauddin Shaikh, accused of involvement in the 26/11 terror attacks, refermed to statements made by Mr Antulay that late Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, additional police commissioner Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, were not killed in firing by terrorists, but murdered. He also referred to Mr Rane’s statement that some politicians were allegedly involved in the incident and he knew their names.
Judge M L Tahaliyani, who is presiding over the trial, stopped advocate Naqvi at this point and asked him to call them as ‘defence witness’, following which advocate Naqvi started using the term.
However, when Mr Naqvi continued to argue on several points unrelated to his client, the court advised him not give further points to Mr Nikam, to argue. Thereafter, Mr Naqvi stopped the argument.
