The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and sitting MP from Osmanabad Padam Singh Patil in connection with murder of congress leader Pavan Raje Nimbalkar. The CBI took custody of Patil when he visited Mumbai for some official work this evening, according to CBI sources here today. The Mumbai Crime Branch has already arrested two people -- Paras Jain and Dinesh Tiwari -- who have reportedly confessed to killing congress leader Nimbalkar. The Crime Branch had earlier claimed that 47-year-old Jain, resident of Mumbai, and Tiwari (37) a native of Gorakhpur in Uttar Prdesh, were paid Rs 30 lakhs to kill the congress leader. The two were arrested by the Crime Branch in February this year. The motorcycle-brone assailants had gunned down Nimbalkar and his driver Samad Qazi near Kalamboli on Mumbai-Pune expressway on June 3, 2006. The Kalamboli police did preliminary investigation and Bombay High Court in October 2008 transferred the case to the CBI. The two suspects are believed to have given statement to the CBI that Padam Singh Patil had given the Supari (contract) to kill congress leader following which the CBI has arrested NCP leader from Mumbai today.
