The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has taken several steps for protection of Indian women deserted/harassed by their NRIs husbands after receiving many complaints. An inter-Ministerial sub committee with Secretary, MOIA as Chairman and representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Women & Child Development, Ministry of Law & Justice, National Commission for Women, National Human Rights Commission and representatives from the State Government of Punjab and Andhra Pradesh had been set up to study the problems faced by Indian women deserted by their overseas Indian spouses and give their recommendations to tackle the problem. The Ministry has launched an awareness campaign through a guidance booklet, information pamphlets in English, Hindi and regional languages and through the electronic and the print media to educate and sensitize prospective brides and their families over martial alliances with overseas Indians. The Ministry has also launched a scheme to provide legal and financial assistance to women deserted by their overseas Indian spouses through Indian Missions/Posts abroad.
