Delhi HC issues notice to DMRC

The Delhi High Court today issued notice to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on a petition filed by Residents Welfare Associations (RWA’s) of Greater Kailash over its failure to take care of all apprehensions of the residents.

The petition sought to draw the attention of the court to the DMRC’ failure to comply with the assurance given to the court that all apprehensions of the residents, including those regarding safety, would be taken care of while building the elevated line.

A bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Manmohan heard a petition filed by the E-block RWAs of GK-I, who in their petition, said the DMRC should have constructed underground metro instead of the elevated one and in future, they must consider this.

Citing the accident which occurred on July 12 at the under- construction elevated line between Defence Colony and Nehru Place, the residents said overhead constructions of Metro are a health and safety hazard. They cause a loss of environmental aesthetics as well degradation of the fauna.

The residents want that the Court should issue directions to DMRC to work on the underground route in future as the elevated stretch would wreak havoc in the congested area, putting at stake, the safety of the public at large. Besides, they said, it would intrude their privacy and also threaten the area’s green cover.
