In order to dispose of about 7 lakh pending cases in various courts in Punjab, it has been decided to start evening courts in the state. 



In the first phase, evening courts would start functioning in important cities. 



This was announced at Muktsar by Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Tirath Singh Thakur after inaugurating the newly constructed Judicial Complex at a cost of Rs 21 crore. 



Justice Thakur said the District and Sessions Court, Muktsar would start functioning from January 14 next year on the occasion of Maghi Mela. 



He said there were also plans to start village courts to solve petty cases and such courts would be setup at the block level. He said in first phase these courts would start functioning as a pilot project in four block to give speedy justice and to dispose off the pending cases.
