GENERAL OVERVIEW

  • A two-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan questioned the ruling Imran Khan government over the delay in convening a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI), for the last two months. The bench headed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa observed that "Either the government is not capable of running the country, or it is unable to make decisions."
  • The additional attorney general (AAG) told the court that the CCI would meet on March 24. "It is a sensitive issue, and the government wants to make a decision through consensus," he said.
  • The bench also expressed the anger over the promulgation of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance.

FURTHER DETAILS

  • Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday slammed Imran Khan’s government for its inability to run the country or take decisions. According to the report of the Pakistani newspaper, Express Tribune, a two judge bench headed by Justice Sardar Tariq and Qazi Faez Isa expressed displeasure over the Punjab government issuing an ordinance on delimitation of constituencies.
  • The bench further asked "Despite the government in three provinces, no decision has been taken in the council. Isn't it the responsibility of the Pakistan government to release the results of the census?"
  • While expressing his anger, Justice Isa during the hearing said, “"Why hasn't the Council of Common Interests met in two months" and asked "Is it not a priority of the government to release the census results".

“There were no such war situations”

  • • According to the court there were no such war conditions that could prevent CCI from holding its meeting. Justice Isa pointed out that meeting could take place via a video link as well and also said that four years have passed since the census was conducted which was in 2017. Additional Attorney General, Aamir Rehman argued that since it is a sensitive matter, the government will take a decision unanimously and the CCI meeting will be held on 24 March.

Why the CCI report is secret?

  • On why the government was keeping the reports confidential, Justice Isa asked, “Are good deeds being kept a secret? It raises questions". Geo news reported, that the judge asked whether the country would run in this manner and the nation wants to know what the province and centre are actually doing.
  • The bench also expressed serious concern over the “promulgation of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance”. According to the Election Commission the ordinance created complexities and the judge said that the Punjab Government does not want local elections to be held and expressing his anger he added that the entire Punjab Assembly was bypassed at the request of one individual.

What do you think about the questions been raised on Imran-led government in Pakistan? Are the questions raised by the Pakistan Supreme Court justified?
